Arts and culture are essential to the fabric and character of our community and offering various arts programs makes it an exciting place to live. From well-known cultural events like the Phoenix Symphony and Ballet Arizona to local talent and art expositions, opportunities abound for people of all ages to enjoy the arts right here in Estrella.
Estrella was proud to again host the return of the Phoenix Symphony in May which featured music by famed composer John Williams. Music from blockbusters like “Star Wars”, “E.T.” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” are among some of his noted works. Also, Ballet Arizona will be appearing at the Estrella Lakeside Amphitheatre this coming September during the 15th Annual Ballet Under the Stars series. The event transports the ballet’s spectacular production of classical to contemporary dances to this unique outdoor setting. What a great way to introduce children, not matter what their age, to the art of music and dance.
Each month, CantaMia hosts an evening of music featuring a variety of engaging themes. Events have included: Hot Salsa Nights and a Hawaiian Luau. These musical get-togethers come complete with food, drinks, dancing and great live music. Everyone is welcome as these events are open to the public. New to Estrella’s event lineup this year, and also open to the public, is the Concert in the Park series. Held at the Lakeside Amphitheater, people can enjoy live music while sitting under the stars. Themes from the series have included Night Groove jazz and a 50’s style sock hop.
Students at Estrella Mountain High School are also very active in the arts through the school’s award-winning culinary and performing arts programs. The culinary students recently won the Culinary Team Bronze Medal and the Culinary Individual Silver Medal at the statewide FCCLA competition in March. Since opening its Performing Arts Center in 2008, the theatre program conducts three shows a year and has put on multiple state level award-winning performances.
Those looking for more hands-on arts experiences are encouraged to head over to the Creative Arts Academy, located at Estrella Mountain Church. The Academy offers a wide variety of art classes for all ages – from preschool to senior adults. The summer schedule includes classes in scrapbooking, card making, painting, clay sculpture, cake decorating, creative writing, dance and drama.
