The Importance Of Giving

When searching for that special community we have found so many of our residents have gravitated to Estrella because of the programs that have been established.  Our residents have expressed that belonging to a place that opens their arms to the greater community to make a difference is truly important.

Estrella demonstrated their ongoing dedication to make a difference, and help those in need, by supporting the “Supplies for Sojourner Center” drive. The partnership with Sojourner Center is part of Estrella’s continued support of HomeAid America. The drive, which was held during the month of June, kicked off the first project of HomeAid’s newest program, HomeAid on Wheels (HOW). HomeAid is one of the nation's largest providers of temporary housing for the homeless. HOW provides a vehicle for HomeAid to expand its reach by assisting nonprofits in communities not served by a local HomeAid chapter.

The Sojourner Center is the largest domestic violence shelter in the United States, and serves more than 2,900 women and children annually. Estrella residents were able to meet a need within the organization by providing items that are necessary for Sojourner residents during the summer such as sunscreen, towels and flip-flops. In addition, residents included a blanket drive in their efforts after learning that upon entering the facility each family receives four twin blankets, and Sojourner Center had very few blankets left in stock.

As part of the HOW project, Shea Homes will be donating time and labor to implement energy efficient renovations that will save Sojourner Center approximately $23,000 a year on energy costs. The project is also made possible by an Environmental Sustainability Program grant from the Walmart Foundation and Owens Corning Foundation will include: installation of solar panels, motion sensor lighting, upgraded insulation and energy efficient light bulbs throughout the facility. In addition to Newland, HOW has been funded nationally by Cisco and an anonymous foundation. The money saved will allow Sojourner Center to open additional beds and provide shelter to more women and children in need.

Newland Communities is a longtime supporter of HomeAid, donating more than $600,000 in the past five years and is the founding sponsor of HOW. Estrella and its residents are just as committed to giving back, and funds raised from past Pumpkin Festivals made it possible to donate $15,000 to Sojourner Center.
