Newland Communities Announced as Founding Sponsor of HomeAid America’s New Program HomeAid on Wheels (HOW)

Estrella Residents Host “Supplies for Sojourner Center” Drive to Support Launch of HOW

Goodyear, AZ (June 5, 2012) – Estrella residents are rallying together to support those in need with the “Supplies for Sojourner Center” drive. This partnership with Sojourner Center is part of Newland Communities continued support of HomeAid America, and will kick off the first project of the newest program, HomeAid on Wheels (HOW). HomeAid is the nation's largest provider of temporary housing for the homeless and HOW will provide a vehicle for HomeAid to expand its reach by assisting nonprofits in communities not served by a local HomeAid chapter. Newland Communities is a longtime supporter of HomeAid, donating more than $600,000 in the past five years, and is the founding sponsor of HomeAid on Wheels.

Throughout the month of June, Estrella residents are stepping up to meet a need within the organization by collecting items necessary for Sojourner residents during the summer season such as sunscreen, towels and flip-flops. In addition, residents are including a blanket drive in their efforts after learning that upon entering the facility each family receives four twin blankets, and Sojourner Center currently has very few blankets in stock.  Residents (and community members) can drop off items at the Starpointe Residents Club, located at 17665 W. Elliott Road in Goodyear, AZ., from June 1 - June 30.

“When we learned Newland was the Founding Sponsor for HomeAid on Wheels, it was an easy decision to lend our support,” said Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager for Estrella. “The Sojourner Center is such an amazing organization and Estrella has such giving residents, we are honored to be part of this effort.”

As the largest domestic violence shelter in the United States, Sojourner Center serves more than 2,900 women and children annually. As part of the HOW project, Shea Homes will be donating time and labor to implement energy efficient renovations that will save Sojourner Center approximately $23,000 a year on energy costs. The project is also made possible by an Environmental Sustainability Program grant from the Walmart Foundation and Owens Corning Foundation will include: installation of solar panels, motion sensor lighting, upgraded insulation and energy efficient light bulbs throughout the facility. In addition to Newland, HOW has been funded nationally by Cisco an anonymous foundation. The money saved will allow Sojourner Center to open additional beds and provide shelter to more women and children in need.
