One of Estrella’s most popular community events, Ballet Under the Stars, thrilled nearly 5,000 attendees again this year as they sat spellbound on the grassy slopes of Estrella’s North Lake. Friday, September 29 was an enchanted evening as talented performers from Ballet Arizona and student performers from Estrella Mountain Elementary School lit up the night.
City of Goodyear Vice Mayor Laura Kaino and Jeff Zimmerman, Director of Entitlements and Development at Estrella, began the evening with a warm welcome, followed by contemporary and classical ballet excerpts from Juan Gabriel, The Four Temperaments and crowd favorite, The Nutcracker! Audience members loved watching ballerinas Demitra Bereveskos and Ethan Price perform as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, it is a dance which has not been performed at Ballet Under the Stars for several years, adding to the excitement. Topping off the evening, after the children performed, the mayor and city councilmembers helped Jeff Zimmerman hand out commemorative roses, provided by Estrella’s developers, letting each performing child know how proud the community is of their courage to share their talents on such a big stage.
Sixteen Food trucks ranging from Taqueria Las Brasas (tacos) to Tempura Takeover (Asian Fusion), Naughty Vegan (Vegan Treats) and Lalas Lemonade (Mocktails and Lemonade) provided plenty of refreshments while a Harvest Moon and gentle breeze made it the perfect Arizona evening for the hundreds of attendees seated on picnic blankets and lawn chairs up and down the lakefront.
For more than a decade, this annual free event has been open to the public at Estrella’s Lakeside Amphitheater in Goodyear. Each year, Ballet Arizona, a nationally recognized ballet company, presents awe-inspiring contemporary and classical ballet excerpts. The performances are the perfect introduction to the arts for young children, many of whom may be inspired by ballet for the first time at Ballet Under the Stars.
