It is no secret the West Valley is one of the fastest growing areas in the Phoenix metropolitan area. In fact, Goodyear is the ninth fastest growing city in the nation according to recent census statistics. To accommodate that growth both the city of Goodyear and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) are working to make sure Estrella and West Valley residents can get where they need to go quickly and efficiently*.
Over the past several years ADOT has added new lanes to Interstate 10 in both directions. The newly opened Loop 202 which connects to I-10 near 59th Avenue means Goodyear and Estrella residents have easier access to both East Valley cities and Tucson, bypassing the downtown area completely. Loop 303 also now connects Goodyear directly to other West Valley cities including Glendale and Peoria, before merging with I-17 and points north, including Prescott, Jerome, Sedona and Flagstaff.
Future plans for the 303 include an extension south, near the Cotton Lane alignment to the future AZ30 freeway. That roadway would run north of the Gila River, between Loop 202 in the east to AZ-85 in the west, providing quicker access to San Diego beaches.
And speaking of vacation destinations, one of the most highly anticipated projects in the West Valley is Interstate 11, which would stretch from Nogales in the south to Las Vegas in the north. Completion of the project will link Phoenix and Las Vegas, the last two US mega-cities not currently connected by an interstate highway. ADOT is already working to complete new lanes on US-93, between Wickenburg and Hoover Dam, turning it into a modern four-lane divided highway. The final route from Nogales to Wickenburg has not been finalized, but current plans show it joining I-10 just west of Goodyear and Estrella.
In addition to the major Department of Transportation projects, the City of Goodyear has a Transportation Master Plan. Among other things the plan accounts for significant population growth in Estrella. Plans are already in the works to widen the Estrella Parkway bridge. The City continues to actively look at ways to improve traffic flow for all those who live and work in Goodyear and Estrella.
