Estrella has integrated numerous facilities into the community to help residents stay fit, meet new friends and enjoy the breathtaking natural surroundings.
Golf
Estrella’s par 72, 18-hole championship golf course features spacious greens and split-level fairways. The award-wining Nicklaus Design course flows along the contours of the land, allowing washes and hillsides to remain in a pristine state. Consistently ranked as one of the top 20 public courses in Arizona by Golfweek, the course is undoubtedly one of the best in the Valley. Golfers of all ages and abilities are sure to have a fun day of golf at Estrella, surrounded by spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Estrella Mountains.
Estrella’s golf facilities are designed to fit your personal goals, with an outstanding two-tiered driving range and two practice putting greens that allow you to work on your game. The Golf Club of Estrella offers discounted rates for Estrella residents as well as a variety of specials throughout the year. Additionally, it’s also ideal for tournaments, charity functions and corporate outings.
What are the benefits of a game of golf? The game is both mentally stimulating and physically challenging. It’s a great way to keep your heart and your brain healthy. Golf also aids weight loss and reduces stress. The golden number of steps per day needed for weight loss is 10,000. An 18-hole round easily exceeds this recommended number, especially when you walk and do not use a golf cart.
Hiking, Running and Biking Trails
Explore the outdoors! Developed to embrace the natural Sonoran Desert, Estrella offers many opportunities to get outside and keep active. The popular Overlook Trail at Estrella connects into the extensive 40+ mile community trail system. Choose to explore it using whatever method fits your style, whether it’s cycling, running or taking a leisurely walk.
The bicycle “pump track” is especially popular for cycling enthusiasts. It’s part of the Foothills Community Park and provides a continuous loop of smooth dirt mounds and berms that are ridden by bicyclists using a pumping motion to maintain speed without pedaling.
These opportunities make it easy to team up with new friends for fitness experiences. Mountain bikers and road cyclists often arrange rides both within the community and out into the surrounding area. Getting outside for a regularly scheduled walk or run creates an enhanced sense of well-being and introduces you to other health-oriented people.
Walking, jogging and biking are exercises that strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular fitness and burn a large number of calories per session.
Court Sports
A brisk game of tennis, volleyball, pickleball or basketball is another great way to meet your neighbors and keep healthy. For volleyball, South Lake Park offers space for sand volleyball games while taking in a beautiful lakeside view. Bougainvillea Park is also a great park for a hearty volleyball game.
Love tennis? You can have a ball at conveniently located tennis courts at South Lake Park, Bougainvillea Park and CantaMia, Estrella’s village for 55 and over. South Lake Park and Canta Mia also have pickleball courts. Pickleball, a mixture of tennis and badminton, is great for all ages. There are four pickleball courts in South Lake Park and six in CantaMia. Residents can also find bocce ball courts at CantaMia. Bocce Ball requires you to muster up your hand-eye coordination before each throw.
Looking to shoot some hoops? You’ll find basketball courts at South Lake Park, Starpointe Residents Club and Bougainvillea Park. Additionally, the Estrella Youth Sports Club organizes basketball leagues and provides a healthy environment for young athletes.
No matter what your skill level, playing tennis and other court sports increases aerobic capacities, lowers your resting heart rate, increases bone density and improves muscle tone, strength and flexibility. Whether you are nine or 99, you’ll improve neural connections and keep in shape because it involves tactical planning, agility and the coordination of different parts of the body.
Personal Training
Estrella’s Starpointe Residents Club offers a wide range of activities that appeal to mind, body and spirit. It’s a state-of-the-art fitness facility with personal trainers that help residents achieve fitness goals. After an initial assessment, trainers can design an individualized workout and assist you in staying motivated and make progress, providing whatever inspires you to move your body and stay in shape.
Personal training has been shown to significantly impact cardiovascular- and muscle strength−related gains. A trainer will provide you with pointers for getting the most out of your workout.
Fitness Classes
All fitness levels can find the perfect class to keep active. Whether it’s yoga, dancercise, Zumba, hula or taekwondo, residents can gain inspiration and dedication from their fellow classmates and instructors. All residents’ clubs offer classes, which are updated from time to time, so check the fitness schedules. It’s a great way to make new friends and stay active!
Yoga is beneficial for increasing flexibility, maintaining your metabolism, and improving athletic performance.
Swimming
Residents have access to beautiful resort-style pools in Estrella, at Starpointe Residents Club (StarSplash Waterpark), Presidio Residents Club and CantaMia. Need a lazy poolside day or a fun-filled day with family and friends? Our beautiful pools are conveniently located close to home.
Starpointe has both a seasonal waterpark and a lap pool, with poolside service and a kid-friendly menu so you can grab a bite to eat after activities. Presidio has a large patio and covered, rentable barbeque area, plus a splash pad for the kids. At CantaMia, choose between a nice outdoor pool or, if you prefer to stay out of the sun, an indoor lap pool.
Swimming laps or just relaxing in the water at the end of the day is an excellent way to relieve stress and reflect upon tomorrow’s activities. Swimming is a good, all-around activity that is low impact, builds endurance, increases muscle strength and improves cardiovascular fitness.
Other Water Activities – Kayaking, Canoeing and paddleboats
At North Lake, you can select your favorite water vehicle at the Estrella Yacht Club. There’s a wide assortment of sailboats, kayaks, canoes and paddleboats. North and South Lake are also stocked with fish for catch-and-release fishing.
If you are looking to venture further for outdoor water activities, Lake Pleasant in Peoria is perfect for boating, fishing, swimming and laying in the sun. The Salt River in Mesa provides a beautiful area for all ages to cool off by tubing or kayaking down the Salt River.
Kayaking has numerous health and physical benefits, including core strength, toned legs, increased upper body strength and weight management, plus it’s a great mood booster.
Youth Activities
For parents who wonder what to do with their kids during a scheduled workout, no stress. They can just bring them along! Children can play in the youth club or PreSchooner Club while their parents work out in Estrella’s Residents Clubs. Be sure to check hours and offerings as Youth Club is open two days a week for those 10 years and older and is free. PreSchooner Club requires a 24-hour notification, children to be potty trained, has a fee and is open six days a week during specific hours as availability allows.
