Back to School Safety Tips from the Goodyear Police Department

A new school year begins Monday, August 7 for many Estrella and Goodyear children and amidst the busyness of shopping for supplies and meet the teacher nights, safety is also a critical component of preparing for a new academic year.

These tips provided by The Goodyear Police Department are a great reminder to parents and community members of ways to help keep Estrella and Goodyear children safe and protected as they head back to class.

Tips for Motorists

  • Put your phones down, drive slow and avoid distractions while in school zones
  • Know the law for sharing the road with school buses
  • Keep crosswalks clear
  • Watch for pedestrians, especially children, as they can be unpredictable
  • Keep an eye out for bicyclists
  • Leave earlier the first two weeks of school to give yourself more time to get to work or other appointments so you don’t feel rushed. Know school start and end times so you can account for more traffic before and after school.

Tips for Students

  • If walking to school, always stay with a group
  • Always walk on the sidewalk
  • Do not enter the street from between 2 parked cars
  • If riding a bike, always wear a properly fitted helmet
  • Never get into a car with a stranger
  • If approached by a stranger, do not have a conversation, immediately tell a trusted adult

Tips for Parents and Caregivers

  • Teach children to look left, right and left again before crossing the street
  • Teach children to always use the crosswalk when crossing the street
  • Teach children to make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street
  • Consider organizing a “walking school bus” for students in your neighborhood. Have a group of children walk to school together with a supervising adult
  • Be vigilant. If you see something, say something
